ShpGeometryInputFormat is used to extract geometry data only from a shapefile.
A shapefile represents geographic features using one of three geometry types:
- Points — e.g., city locations
- Lines — e.g., roads, rivers
- Polygons — e.g., country borders, land parcels
A shapefile is a collection of related files rather than a single file. The main components include:
- .shp — stores the actual geometry (shapes)
- .dbf — stores attribute data (not used by this InputFormat)
- .shx — index file linking geometry records
- .prj — coordinate reference system / projection information
Output Format
Each record contains only the geometry, represented as text:
geometry
Where:
- geometry
Geometry encoded in WKT (Well-Known Text) format
Configuration
No additional configuration parameters are required for ShpGeometryInputFormat.
Behavior
- Reads geometry data from shapefiles
- Ignores all attribute information
- Converts geometries into WKT text format
- Outputs one geometry per record
Typical Use Cases
- Extracting pure geometry data without attributes
- Feeding spatial geometries into GIS or spatial analytics workflows
- Converting shapefile geometries into text-based formats (WKT)
- Performing geometry-only spatial processing
